The Bristol assembly hall scandel

is there anyone from the area who remmbers the story of the 30,000 spent on trees for the vist of a gb memmber.. i dont know the exact story as it is now about 7 or 8 years ago but i heard it from several people that worked on the hall.. apparently a gb memmber was to come to britian to dedicate the hall (i cant remmember which one).. the brothers in charge wanted the hall to look nice for his vist.but the land around was yet to be landscaped.. so brothers enquired as to the viability of planting some trees but were informed that it was the wrong time of year and they would die.. the cost of the trees was around the region of 30,000.plus the amount of free labour from the brothers in planting them.. anyway the big bosses of the scheme decided to ignore the professional advice and planted them anyway.. they all died.. 30.000 pounds of money from old ladies, pioneers and little children as well as ordinary publishers went down the drain for the gb's visit.. nice to know they used our money wisely.

Hi Slepy;

I remember contributing to the place- but not the tree farce-what a bunch of idiots- It dos'nt sound as though many know about this- I wonder how they would all feel about 30,000 being wasted due to an inability to take advice?

We were asked to contribute an extra 1 a week to the Bristol assembly Hall- then as time ticked by we kept getting 'encouragements' to contribute more and more per week or else construction could'nt start;this went on for AGES- some in the cong. could barely afford to give normally-without an added burdon of another 'debt'

Before that we used to use a school 12 miles away-I never went to Bristol;everytime it was assembly weekend I had to make some excuse- the thought of 40 miles there and back in a day- then repeat... with 3 children?No thanks.

Did it look cheap in the end then?

There was an experience that was used to try to tempt me to go, of a study who smoked; she went to Bristol and went into the bathroom for a sneaky fag, but could'nt smoke as the loos were SO BEAUTIFUL and SO CLEAN!!! She could'nt defile those holy loos, and gave up on the spot! Hallelulah, it was such a wonderful place, even those toilets gave a good witness!!!

I still did'nt go;I heard there was no where to smoke.

BBQ Update

well, i finally got home, after a round trip of about 1600 miles, visiting 28 ex-jw's and their families, from around britain.

the highlight of the trip was definitely englishman's bbq .

the spider-filled digeridoo, was a real bonus, as was the sing-alonga-eman (shame that not everyone knew "wild rover" .

It was lovely to meet you and to laugh until I nearly wet myself. I'll ride on that compliment for years to come- i've been called many things in my time ,but never stunning.

hi everyone.. my name is caspian, i am an elder in a congregation in england.. i have been reading this forum for about 12 months, never having the confidence to log in.. however after all the information that has come to light in the recent weeks, i feel that i need to start coming to terms with the crisis that i now feel.. i am a third gen jw, and been an elder for 15 years, my family whom i love dearly are all naive fully committed jw's.. please if any current or ex elders in a similar situation care to make any good advice.

Hello Caspian;i'm in England too-i'm glad you feel you want to post now.

I hope you find many answers to alot of questions here; and help us find some too.You've received alot of good advice on fading slowly and building up a network of alternative friends and interests;I'll just add that there are alot of unhappy elders' wives and witnesses in general out there and your slow revealing of information may not necessarily fall on deaf ears...

Hello Joy; It was lovely to meet you at the bbq.You and your husband are very warm,intuitive people that made me feel so pleased to have met you.Glad to hear you had a great time-I hope the London touristy trip is going/went well ! Do they let you touch the stones at Stonehenge again now ?or are the barriers still there?

Does power corrupt?

most of the people i knew as witnesses were nice people with genuine motives.. in fact those with obvious personnallity flaws, would not , in my congregation anyway , be made servants or elders.. but i wonder did the postion attained in the org actually change the people who were chosen?.

does the extra respect , power and aurthority over others cause changes in a person makeup they can not help?.

I have to assume that it does, i'm afraid;I've seem many nice brothers turn into ministerial servants and then elders etc;that behave more oddly with the years that pass; on one hand they can be the most hard line in the congregation, and on the other hand, the most corrupted and immoral......

actually that was 58 words in the end.

just a post to thank mike and christina for a such a brilliant day;the food, the welcome and the constant hospitality was so kind, i had a great time meeting you all,even though i'd been so nervous.

so many people made such a huge effort to be there,and you were all lovely.

it really made my day to have you all around me; i feel so protective of you all now!
